The Disappointments of 'Detroit' (film review)

Despite moments of emotional power, Kathryn Bigelow's film offers a narrow and unnuanced portrait of the city's 1967 riots.

According to the review:

  • The film is overly dramatized

  • Appears at first to tell a broad, multi-faceted story but doesn't

  • Focus is quickly narrowed to a single building during one night

  • Succeeds in placing viewers in the shoes of the helpless

  • Story is "disappointingly one-dimensional"

  • Says nothing about the cultural and institutional forces that fed racism

It's basically a horror/torture film so be prepared.
