Robert Lee IV, the great-great-great-great nephew of Confederate general Robert E. Lee, made an appearance at this year's VMAs, introducing Heather Heyer's mother with a speech condemning white supremacy.
Lee was the pastor of Bethany United Church of Christ in North Carolina, where many of the congregants had an unfavorable response to the speech. Several, but not all, members voiced concern with Lee praising Black Lives Matter, the Women's March, and the Charlottesville anti-protestors.
When Bethany prepared to vote on Lee's tenure, he resigned.
