The following ten selections are just a few of the many horror entries that contain some link to our concern (or lack thereof) for what is happening to the world and its creatures.
Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster (1971)
Eco theme: Pollution
Adam Wingard, the director for the upcoming Godzilla vs. King Kong, lists this as his second favorite Godzilla flick. Most fans of the franchise have polarizing opinions about Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster (original title: Godzilla vs. Hedorah). Unlike most of the childish or lighthearted 1960s followups to the original and very dark 1954 movie, this one incorporates more sci-fi horror elements. The on-screen human fatalities are graphic, and the titular kaiju antagonist pays some homage to the creature from The Blob. Space monster Hedorah feeds on smog and pollution, all of which is on full display in this bizarre and psychedelic feature.
Frankenfish (2004)
Eco theme: Genetic engineering, invasive species
This 2004 creature feature was loosely inspired by the Crofton snakehead incident of 2002. The highly aggressive and predatory Northern snakehead was accidentally introduced to American waters, giving them top predator status when they should not be in the area at all. Frankenfish takes that idea much further by genetically manipulating the fish and then releasing them into the unsuspecting bayou for sport fishing. More than alligators soon become prey for the monstrous fish.
Humanoids From the Deep (1980)
Eco theme: Genetic engineering
A cannery's extreme growth hormone fed to salmon is why a California fishing town is suddenly overrun by amphibious monsters in this Roger Corman "classic." For some reason, Corman remade the movie in 1996 as part of his Showtime series Roger Corman Presents. For those who sensitive to such depictions, there is a sexual assault in the movie.
Isolation (2005)
Eco theme: Genetic engineering
Set in rural Ireland, someone thought it would be smart to make faster growing cattle. The experiments go off course when a cow is pregnant with six fetsuses, all of which are deformed, fanged, and hungry for human blood. This could cause a global issue since other cows would be infected if the creatures escape.
C.H.U.D. (1984)
Eco theme: Waste disposal
Rural environment gets a sort of reprieve in this 1984 monster flick. The reckless actions of man affect its own kind and urban home in C.H.U.D. A city decides to dispose of its waste by-products by dumping it in abandoned subway tunnels. The homeless population comes in contact, and they are turned into Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers.
The Last Winter (2006)
Eco theme: Global warming, fracking
As evident with with this movie and his other projects, director Larry Fessenden is enamored with the wendigo. This cautionary tale involves an Alaskan oil company being haunted by previously dormant, now awakened supernatural spirits.
Long Weekend (1978)
Eco theme: Disrespecting nature
A couple goes on a wilderness vacation in this unnerving '70s nature horror classic from Australia. The man litters, kills animals, and commits other transgressions that upset the local wildlife. In 2008, a remake alternatively called Nature's Grave was released.
The Bay (2012)
Eco theme: Water contamination
The residents of a seaside town in Maryland become hosts to deadly parasites (a mutant tongue-eating louse) when the local waters reach a staggering level of toxicity. This found footage movie opts out of the usual paranormal route and goes for a situation that is more likely.
Prophecy (1979)
Eco theme: Deforestation, contamination
A man from the EPA gets caught up in a war between loggers and a forest's natives. To worsen matters, a mutagen has turned the local animals into freaks of nature. The humans spend the whole of the movie trying to escape as a mutant bear stalks them.
The Thaw (2009)
Eco theme: Global warming
This movie takes cues from both the 1982 version of The Thing and the episode "Ice" from The X-Files. A dangerous type of parasite found inside the frozen remains of a wooly mammoth infects a group of research scientists in the Canadian Arctic. To show the effects of global warming, one character decides to infect himself with the parasites so that he can spread them to the rest of the world.
