Guess Who's Hosting the New Gong Show Revival?
The Gong Show revival on ABC premieres on June 22 and is set to be hosted by "legendary British comic Tommy Maitland" - but if you've never heard of him, it's probably because he doesn't appear to actually exist.
Maitland has an extensive online biography provided by ABC (it says he hosted game shows in the UK and Australia and appeared in a few James Bond knockoff films) and a Twitter account that coincidentally just started sending out tweets today.
Gong Show executive producer Will Arnett says he has been a fan of Maitland's comedy since he was a teenager, and Maitland himself issued a statement saying "When Will Arnett came to me and asked me to host The Gong Show, I said, ‘I'm honoured at the request, but I'm retired. Then he told me how much I was being paid, in U.S. dollars, and I said, ‘I'm still honoured, but no longer retired.'"
So why has no one ever heard of him? Neither ABC nor Arnett will admit it, but according to E!, it appears that Maitland is none other than a heavily disguised Mike Meyers
